----------
In the year 25 BC, the first Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus Augustus) had found the Civitas Emerita Augusta and welcome to reward the veterans (emeriti) of V (Alaudae) and X (Gemini) legions, which fought against the Cantabri and Astures.
Emerita Augusta has its importance due to its strategic location near the River Guadiana (Anas as was known by the Romans), was designated capital of the province of Lusitania. Today, Merida’s visitors can have the feeling that they entered in a time capsule, due to the restored Roman Theater and the Amphitheater in perfect state of preservation, is not difficult for tourists to see how these buildings were in their golden era.
